Pilheiros

Beautiful freshness and complexity. Aromas of nicely ripe red and black fruits, chocolate and spices. The wine is voluminous and free from harsh tannins. The advanced ripeness of the grapes is reflected in the roundness and generous flavors. The finish is very supple and sweet, thanks to the natural acidity that creates a sensation of ease and great pleasure. Suggestion: Osso Buco, marinated tournedos, chicken and caramelised red pepper brochettes, Portuguese cheeses, such as Terrincho or São Jorge.

Wine Spectator

Medium- to full-bodied red, with red plum, smoke and meat notes and some roasted elements. Very spicy on the finish, with hoisin sauce notes. Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Drink now through 2009.

Score: 88. —Kim Marcus, March 31, 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

The Lurton brothers, who make wines from France to South America, have now started to produce two Douro wines, with the help, they say, of the Lavradores de Feitoria group of producers. This is the simpler of the two wines, dominated by spicy flavors, very soft and round, ready to drink now.

Score: 87. —Roger Voss, March 01, 2007.

Wine Advocate

The 2004 Pilheiros is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, partly barrel aged. It opened rather light and unassuming, and I was surprised to see it pick up some weight with air, and become rather intense. Its mid-palate will always be on the lighter side, and it is not as flavorful or as full as its big brother, the Grande Escolha reviewed here. However, I was even more surprised to find that, as both wines aired out over a couple of hours, this regular bottling often matched the Escolha in intensity. I liked its clean flavor profile. Drink now-2011.

Score: 87. —Mark Squires, June 2007.
