Cliff Lede
The 2006 Cabernet lights up out of the bottle with a precocious bouquet of exotic spices and old leather. Given a moment to rest, aromas of sweet marjoram, rose oil, cardamom and blackcurrant jam evolve into exceptionally sweet floral notes of star jasmine and a touch of trumpet vine. Initial flavors of cherry deepen as fine tannins expand and unfold. Dark stone fruits mix and integrate with sweet tannins and fleshy acidity, giving way to a persimmon inspired finish that coats the mouth.
Wine Spectator
Creamy and seductive, with ripe currant, mocha, mineral and espresso notes that are full-bodied, deep and complex. Persistent and long on the finish, ending with excellent structure. Drink now through 2018.
Score: 92. —James Laube, April 30, 2009.Wine Advocate
The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap is a nearly 9,000-case cuvee that is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons one can buy at this price point, particularly given the Shangri-La prices of Napa. Deep ruby/purple with lots of red and black currants as well as hints of spring flowers and bay leaf, the wine is medium-bodied, with nothing out of place - acidity, wood, tannin, or alcohol. It is a supple, stylish wine that doesn't cheat the consumer on flavor or complexity. It should evolve for at least 15 or so years.
